A Palm Bay newborn and his parents have quite a story to tell after the baby boy was born before they could get to the hospital.

Chad Malley and his pregnant wife, Tye, had just left their home the night of June 23.

Tye was having contractions awaiting their third child.

But the baby wasn't going to wait for the hospital.

Chad pulled into the nearest place he could find, a convenience store at the intersection of Palm Bay Road and Dairy Road.

They were just minutes from their house and still miles from the hospital.

Fortunately, Chad is a firefighter and EMT based at Patrick Air Force Base.

After calling 911, his training kicked in as the dispatcher walked him through the birth, all while in the front seat of their SUV.

"The dispatcher was excellent. She was on it," said Chad Malley.

For the expectant mom, the experience was like a blur and something off a movie screen.

"The 7-Eleven clerk coming out, staring through the window, wide-eyed, not knowing what to do. The crowd of people gathered around and me, relying on Chad for everything," described Tye Malley.

Now Cais, the baby boy, has a nickname likely to stick for a lifetime -- Big Gulp.

"We will take him to 7-Eleven. I guess everyone's been joking about it, on his birthday get him a Slurpee or whatever," said Chad.

"His nickname is probably going to be ‘Big Gulp’ forever, whether he likes it or not. And I think all 9 pounds, 10 and a half ounces, I think Big Gulp suits him!” added Tye.

Mother and baby are doing fine.

Cais joins his two older siblings, both born a more traditional way - at the hospital, not on the way there.

The couple wants to thank the 911 dispatcher and the paramedics who arrived on scene and took them to the hospital -- their original destination.
