Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan campaigned in The Villages Saturday with his 78-year-old mom, Betty Douglas, by his side.

After Lee Greenwood sang “God Bless the USA,” Ryan kicked off his speech by bringing his mother on stage.

During his 20-minute speech, Ryan touched on a very important issue that hits close to home for everyone in the audience -- Medicare.

"We must reform it for my generation. To save it for this generation, you have to reform it for my generation so it doesn't go bankrupt when we want to retire," said Ryan.

He talked about the Republican duo's plan to go head in head with the current administration to debate on the issue.

Supporters said they need Medicare, future generations need Medicare, and they need Romney and Ryan to keep that guarantee.

“He's trying to tell the rest of the country, 'Listen we're in The Villages. This is where everybody is that is on Medicare. They want to keep it, not raid it,'" said Chris Hopkins from Montverde.

The crowd was happy that Ryan brought his mom, which emphasized how important Medicare is to the campaign.

Ryan also discussed Romney’s track record, highlighting his involvement with the Salt Lake Olympics and history of being bi-partisan.

He talked about utilizing America’s energy sources to bring down gas prices and also their plan for getting people back to work.

“We need people, who are out of work, to be able to go back to school to get the skills they need to get new jobs and new careers so they can get back on the path to prosperity,” Ryan said.

The GOP vice presidential candidate said after his father died, his mother went back to school to get the skills needed to start her own business.

The Villages is considered a hot spot for conservative candidates seeking support, especially among senior voters.

The demographic of retirees have a very high voter turnout and have donated millions to the Republican Party over the last two years.

Despite having a majority of Republicans at The Villages, several Obama supporters also attended, holding signs and chanting.

On Saturday evening, Ryan will attend a private fundraising dinner at the Club on Treasure Island in Pinellas County.
