A DeLand teenager likes his mohawk spiked out -- to 16 inches.

His efforts to get the 'do approved, however, hit a road block this school year: His principal.

When Asher Stonesifer wore his spiked hair to DeLand High School on Tuesday, his principal warned him that he was violating the school dress code.

The 17-year-old showed up to school the next day, spikey hair and all, and was sent home.

"I'm fighting for my right to spike my mohawk and have my spikes during school time," said Stonesifer said.

The school district dress code has no mention of hair. However, schools can go over and above the dress code.

"The dress code says that the principal has to determine whether or not it is appropriate for an educational setting, if it's too extreme if it causes a disruption," said spokeswoman Nancy Wait.

Stonesifer went before the Volusia school board, but in the end the principal has the last word and this high school senior will wear his hair down.

"Spiking your hair doesn't make you learn any different," said Rae Stonesifer, Asher's mother.

Stonesifer will be permitted to spike his hair once more during spirit days in early October.
