In a particularly poignant moment at the Democratic National Convention, former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords recited the pledge of allegiance Thursday.

Giffords, who is still recovering from being shot in the head in 2011, walked onto the stage with Congresswoman and friend Debbie Wasserman Schultz. She was stiff as she walked, and had some noticeable limpness on one side of her body, but when she recited the pledge she did so with a clear voice, even if she did have to slur a couple words.

The recitation drew a standing ovation, and tears from many convention spectators. She smiled broadly and waved enthusiastically to the audience as they chanted, "Gabby, Gabby."

Giffords' performance was emotional not only for Democrats, but for anyone who knew her story, and knew her. Congressman Eric Cantor, the Republican Majority Leader, Tweeted:

"Gabby Giffords leading the Pledge of Allegiance is an inspiration to all Americans."

Giffords has helped out Democrats on occasion after resigning earlier this year to focus on her recovery. She campaigned for the former aide who took her seat in Congress, Ron Barber. She also has formed a political action committee.

Democratic officials, sensing the dramatic effect of Giffords' appearance, pushed back the Pledge a few hours.
