Going to the theme parks or the malls this weekend? High traffic areas in Central Florida could be trouble for folks looking to dodge the flu.

Dr. Tim Hendrix of Centra Care says to stock up on sanitizer and keep your hands away from your face.

"In this area there is two things going on. Number one we have other people coming in from other parts of the country where we are seeing more influenza. Massachusetts is one example where we are seeing more epidemic levels. So these people are coming down from our area and bringing the virus with them,” said Hendrix.

Orlando is an international city, with tourist coming from all across the world. Right now 47 states in the country are classified as experiencing “widespread” cases of the flu.

As folks flock from those states to Orlando, they mingle and rub shoulders at places like our theme parks.

“And they are in line, they are all together, so no matter how much you wipe down surfaces and use hand sanitizer people are coughing an sneezing around you," said Hendrix.

SeaWorld offered flu shots for its team members, and keeps up communication about hand washing and sanitizing.

Hendrix had more tips about safety.

“Now is a good time to emphasize hand hygiene ok. Washing your hands and using hand sanitizers, it’s not gonna be a problem, it frequently reduces the amount of virus and bacteria on your hand. And avoiding touching your hand to your mouth and face, because that is how the virus is transmitted,” Hendrix said.

And the tales about getting the flu from getting a flu shot?

Simply not true.

“You can’t. The injection in the vaccination contains a dead virus. It’s a killed virus that triggers your immune response to give you immunity. That dead virus cannot cause an infection,” said Hendrix.
