Secret Service Director Julia Pierson has resigned from her post, following two recent security breaches at the White House.

High-ranking lawmakers from both parties urged Pierson to resign. Congressional support is eroding following her poorly received testimony about the White House break-in.

The office of Senator Chuck Schumer, D-New York, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, said the senators would call for Pierson's resignation on Wednesday afternoon.

Representative Jason Chaffetz, a senior Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said Pierson should either resign or President Barack Obama should fire her.

House Speaker John Boehner said Pierson's appearance before a House panel Tuesday "left us with more questions than answers." Boehner stopped short of calling for Pierson's resignation but backed a call for an independent investigation.

Pierson will be replaced by Joseph Clancy, a former special agent in charge of the president's protective detail who retired in 2011. Pierson has been with the agency for 30 years.

Pierson took over the embattled agency last year after embarrassing incidents involving misconduct by officers and agents, including the 2012 Colombia prostitution scandal.
