The Flagler County Canvassing Board met Friday morning, which is normally a ho-hum type of meeting.

They processed 552 absentee ballots, but there was an extra pair of eyes watching the entire proceedings.

Linda Hastings-Ard, who works in the State Division of Elections was on hand to observe.

Flagler County leaders asked the state to send an observer to all remaining canvassing board meetings, as well as the general election next month in a continued battle with the supervisor of elections, Kimberle Weeks.

Weeks says county administration is trying to exert too much influence on the canvassing board and welcomes any observer from the state.

“I mean, that's pretty common. The state's been here multiple times throughout my term in office, since 2009. They come in and observe randomly, they're usually always present during the logic and accuracy testing but I always welcome their presence,” said Flagler County's Supervisor of Elections Kimberle Weeks.

Weeks is currently being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for recording a conversation between a canvassing board member and the county attorney, who also advises the board.

Both men say they were not aware they were being recorded as the canvassing board meeting had been moved to a neighboring room.
