Two men were arrested early Saturday after they were caught trying to steal an ATM from a Walgreens in Volusia County by using a chain and a stolen pickup truck, police said.

Bryan Danna, 27, and Alan Tassell, 31, both from Kanas, are suspected of attempting to take the ATM from the store located at 1800 State Road 44, in New Symrna Beach.

The men smashed the front door of the business just after 1:45 a.m.

They tried to wrap a chain around the ATM and pull it out of the business with a truck. As the alarm sounded, a nearby Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted the crime in progress. When the men discovered the chain was too short to wrap around the ATM, they fled the business in a stolen Dodge pickup truck. The deputy followed them.

The two men refused to stop for authorities as they headed toward Port Orange.

The men eventually crashed the pickup truck near the intersection of Ridgewood Avenue and Church Street after they ran over a tire-deflation device, police said.

Tassell was immediately taken into custody, but Danna ran away from the crash scene. He was arrested about an hour later after a K-9 unit located him hiding in a boat along the 4400 block of Halifax Avenue.

Both men face numerous charges, including burglary, possession of burglary tools, using a motor vehicle to commit burglary and grand theft auto.

Tassell was also charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding of police.

Both men were taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
