Gov. Rick Scott brushed off Charlie Crist's TV ad attacking his record on equal pay for women, saying his Democratic opponent should know Florida already has a law in the books protecting equal pay.

The incumbent Republican responded to the ad Tuesday during a campaign stop in Lake County.

It's true the law exists, but the Crist camp claims not enough is being done to make sure that's actually happening.

The ad makes equal pay for women an important part of former Gov. Crist's election campaign, even saying that Crist plans to spend his first day back at his old job instructing agencies to adopt new procedures that seek to eliminate wage discrimination within companies that do business with Florida's state government.

"What Charlie Crist doesn't realize is we already have laws governing equal pay in our state," Scott said during his stop Tuesday in Minneola.

That law is called the Fair Labor Standards Act, which does require employers to pay men and women equal pay for the same job.

According to the Crist campaign, "In Florida, women on average are paid 83 cents for every dollar paid to men," and that more needs to be done to make sure women and men are paid equally.

Scott said more jobs and education are the answer.

"The best thing to do is to make sure everybody gets the best education system, best education, and create as many opportunities as you can," the governor said.

Scott did not say if more needed to be done; only that laws are in place to protect equal pay.
