Major news from Washington D.C. on Wednesday, where federal regulators approved the first vaccine to prevent a potentially deadly form of meningitis.

The Food and Drug Administration gave the OK to a vaccine that treats a particular form of meningitis common among college students.

The news comes after a student in Polk County died of a suspected meningitis infection earlier this month.

The bacteria can infect the bloodstream and then spread to the lining around the brain and spinal cord.
