Late this afternoon, a jury convicted Dante Martin of the hazing that killed fellow band member Robert Champion.

It took less than two hours for the jury to deliberate and come up with a verdict.

The jury has convicted former Florida A&M University band member Dante Martin. They found him guilty on all charges of felony hazing and manslaughter in the death of former drum major Robert Champion. Manslaughter is a crime that carries a max penalty of 15 years behind bars.

Martins family was visibly shaken in the court room and in tears. They did not want to speak on camera but News 13 caught up with Robert Champion's family to get their reaction to the verdict. They have been in court every day for this trial.

"Right now I don't have any tears, but those tears will come. I guarantee you. Will not only be for my son, but for that young man," said Robert Champion's mother, Pam.

"I think it's the only verdict the jury could've come to you based on the law and it's very good to see the jury is following the law. I mean I'm sure it wasn't easy for them. No Mr. Martin doesn't seem like a bad person," added State Attorney Jeff Ashton.

The defense has made a motion for a mistrial. Judge Renee Roche she will wait for another date to hear that motion.

The defense also requested that Martin remain free while awaiting his sentence. The judge denied that request.

Martin was immediately fingerprinted and handcuffed and taken into the Orange county sheriffs office custody. His sentencing date is set for January 9.
