Retailers and shippers are making plans to avoid 2013's holiday shipping fiasco.

Last year millions of Americans didn't get their packages in time for Christmas. One big factor was the major weather problems around the nation.

FedEx officials said they have a team of meteorologists watching for those weather concerns. The company also plans to add 50,000 seasonal workers.

UPS has also bolstered its capacity with modular facilities and plans to hire 95,000 temporary workers.

Amazon said it has expanded its network of shipping and fulfillment centers, and is adding 80,000 temp employees.

The major shippers expect big increases over last year. UPS said it expects to deliver about 585 million packages in December, up 11 percent.

FedEx said it will move about 290 million deliveries. The U.S. Postal Service will deliver a whopping 15 billion cards, letters and packages.
