After police found card skimmers on several ATMs at the Altamonte Mall on Tuesday, experts said that's a reminder that you take a risk every time you use your credit or debit card.

Shoppers packed the malls Wednesday to pick up last-minute gifts on Christmas Eve, but thieves may also be out and about, looking to take advantage.

"You certainly feel very vulnerable and taken advantage when it happens," said Holly Salmons, with the Better Business Bureau of Central Florida.

Salmons said she had her banking information stolen, and the skimmers found at the Altamonte Mall have shoppers on high alert.

"A lot of your identity now is digital and you’ve got to be careful," said shopper Corey Gilson.

"I was worried about the potential of having my personal identity stolen, my credit card information," said Ryan Detwiler.

Card skimmers are installed on ATMs, gas pumps and other devices that take credit or debit cards. They capture your banking information and can help identity thieves get access to your money.

"Law enforcement has a difficult time identifying what a typical skimmer looks like, because they are constantly changing," said Salmons.

But there are ways to better protect yourself. Before you scan your card, the BBB advises to check the ATM first. Many times these devices are attached to the machine and can come loose.

You should also check to see if there is a small camera near the machine that could be used to capture you typing in your PIN.

The most important thing to do is to check your bank statements.

"Every time you use your card, you are at risk," Salmons said.

No one was arrested for the skimmers at the Altamonte Mall as of Wednesday evening, and police said they were unaware of any victims at this time.

If you suspect suspicious behavior on your account, immediately contact your bank to report any suspicious activity. You should also contact Altamonte Springs police at (407) 339-2441, or leave an anonymous tip with Crimeline at (800) 423-TIPS (8477).
