The City Beautiful has landed another major sports event.

City leaders announced Wednesday the Citrus Bowl will host the Cure Bowl beginning December 2015.

This game will raise awareness and money for breast cancer research and joins the Capital One and Russell Athletic bowls as the third game at the historic stadium.

The game will match teams from the American Athletic Conference, which UCF is a member of, and the Sun Belt.

“But a great state-of-the-art stadium is nothing without great sporting events," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. "Events that give our residents great pride, draw passionate fans, and just as importantly add to our local economy.”

The announcement comes one day after Dyer announced the AAC men's college basketball tournament will take place at the Amway Center in March 2016 and 2017.

"That is the conference that UCF plays in, so we just hosted the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament and we’re going to be bidding for ’16, ’17, and ’18 for the NCAA Tournament,” Dyer said. “But we could have both a conference tournament followed by the second and third rounds of the men’s tournament.”

All of these sporting announcements are part of a bigger picture for the city, which hopes these events at local venues can boost the economy.

The Citrus Bowl is currently undergoing a $200 million reconstruction project.

The NCAA tournament brought in an estimated $10 million last month.
