A new era begins in Orange County's second largest city today.

For the first time in decades, Apopka will has a new mayor.

Mayor Joe Kilsheimer was officially been sworn into office around noon Tuesday. He replaces John Land, who was in office for more than 60 years.

Kilsheimer defeated Land in an April 8 runoff election.

"Join me in recognizing Mayor John Land's many contributions to the city of Apopka," Kilsheimer said. "Would you please join me for another round of applause for Mayor John Land.”

Kilsheimer then turned toward the future, laying out some of his plans now that he's in office. First and foremost, he said he wants a smooth transition.

He also wants to bring high-wage jobs to Apopka.

And in order to do that, he first wants feedback from all of Apopka's business leaders by forming what he's calling a mayor's task force.

"Where we invite senior members of the Apopka business community, those from our community organizations, and bring those people in to start creating that feedback loop that's so important to our future," Kilsheimer said.

Land cut his salary to $0 the last few years in office. Kilsheimer said he's not sure how much or if he'll be paid.

"It's to be determined," he said. "Staff is going to take a look at what is the right thing to do -- what's fair, reasonable and appropriate -- and make a recommendation to the City Council.  We'll have discussion about it in the near future."
