A Florida lawmaker is coming under fire for comments that  a standardized testing organization aims to make public school students homosexual.

Both education officials, and a state legislator say the link between testing and swaying sexual preference are far fetched.

Republican state representative Charles Van Zant, of Keystone Heights is under fire for his comments about common core testing and its effect on students.

He claims A.I.R., the company contracted by the state to develop the test, has close ties to the LGBT community.

And now, those comments from an Orlando education conference back in March, have gone viral on Youtube.

"Unless this is stopped we'll promote double mindedness in state education and attract every one of your children to become as homosexual as they possibly can."

Now, other lawmakers and even the teacher’s union president are firing back.

"I think he's way out there. Clearly  there's issues with common core that should be addressed, that's not one of them. And he's criticizing a test that hasn't been developed yet," said Andrew Sparr, president of the teacher's union.

"Those comments are definitely out of line," said State Rep Dwayne Taylor.

Representative Taylor who sits on the education appropriations committee says it's highly unlikely that a standardized test can either determine or change a student's sexual preference.

Both Taylor and Van Zant were elected to the state house of representatives in 2008, and Taylor says he does not believe Van Zant will retract his statements.

"I think that it is hurtful to a number of people, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm not surprised," said Taylor. "I've witnessed him making certain comments like that on the house floor since we got elected in 2008."

We reached out to Van Zant’s office for a comment about the reaction his statements are getting.

So far, we haven’t heard back.

"Can a test sway children towards homosexuality? I think it's ridiculous to think that it could," said Sparr.

Florida's education commissioner, Pam Stewart is also speaking out against Representative Van Zant’s comments.
