A man who was brought to the Marion County Jail for violation of probation and career offender registration ended up with another charge after he attacked a corrections officer while in the booking area.

Xavier Washington, 43, was booked into the jail around 2:19 p.m. May 30. While waiting, Washington became disruptive and was instructed by a corrections officer to follow him to a holding cell, deputies said.

Washington then cursed at the corrections officer, according to a Sheriff's Office report. After refusing to comply with instructions three times, Washington was warned that the officer would pepper spray him.

Washington then continued to use profanity toward the corrections officer, and so he was sprayed with pepper foam. Washington then jumped up and punched the corrections officer. He then wrapped his arms around him in a bear hug, slamming the officer onto his back. The corrections officer's head struck the metal bench, and Washington continued to punch the officer while he was on the floor until other corrections officers were able to help.

Washington was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
