Mayor Buddy Dyer has confirmed to News 13 that the city of Orlando will not make a run at hosting the Democratic National Convention in 2016, despite being asked to bid.

Orlando was one of 15 cities asked in April to submit a bid to host the DNC, which could cost about $60 million.

But while the payout on that investment could be triple, Dyer told News 13's Ybeth Bruzual on Tuesday that the timing just isn't right for the city, or the Orange County Convention Center.

YBETH BRUZUAL: This Friday, June 6, is the deadline established by the Democratic National Committee to receive bids for the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Talk to us about the process of Orlando trying to get this thing.

MAYOR BUDDY DYER: Well, we were asked to bid. The Democratic National Committee chair [Florida U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz] is a good friend of mine, and I think they would like to see it held in Florida, or at least have some Florida applicants.

So, Miami and Orlando were identified as two cities under consideration. But having spent a good part of time analyzing this with our tourism friends, it comes at a bad time for us — in the summertime, when we're at capacity anyway — so there's no real add-on value. So, I don't think we're going to bid.

YB: You don't think you're going to bid? That's big news, because you and I, actually, were at the convention in Charlotte — the last one — and we could see just all the business, all the folks that were coming in and spending a lot of money. But we get that on a regular basis.

DYER: And especially in the summer months, and I've had a back-and-forth with the DNC about whether we could hold it in September. Remember, in Charlotte, it was after Labor Day, and that would be a more likely scenario for us. But it just doesn't make sense for us to have it in June, July or August.

YB: Maybe 2020?

DYER: Maybe.
