The tornado that touched down Friday in Volusia County has been classified as an EF-1, the National Weather Service confirmed Saturday.

Strong thunderstorms developed over southeast Volusia County late Friday afternoon following a sea breeze collision, the report states. One of the storms became severe and produced a tornado, which impacted Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach.

Estimated peak winds were between 100 and 105 mph. The tornado traveled about 1.5 miles and was about 75 yards wide.

The tornado officially started at 4:24 p.m., in Edgewater, and ended at 4:29 p.m., in Edgewater.

The tornado touched down at the Massey Ranch Airpark, 635 Air Park Road. There were no injuries.

It will take some time to clean up after the tornado tore through the park. Branches were scattered all over, a chain link fence was bent and the garage to an airplane hangar was ripped off.

Three airplane hangars took the brunt of the damage, though. One hangar was completely destroyed. Trees were uprooted in the nearby Wildwood subdivision were. Three planes were flipped, too.

"The backside of this hangar, you could just see metal and insulation just blown all the way out," said Shawn Tamboia, of Edgewater. "Covering the runways, probably the whole bottom half of one of the hangars is blown out. You can see parts and debris everywhere."

Several people were inside the hangars during the tornado.

Strong winds also caused damage to homes, hotels and vehicles in New Smyrna Beach, too.
