The public will have their first chance Thursday to sound off on Brevard Public Schools’ proposed budget for the upcoming year.

There are no school closures on the list this year and no cuts.

The state legislature gave the district a $13 million boost for the 2014-2015 school year. However, approximately $8 million is earmarked.

Administrators said the rest will be used to pay for dual enrollment and health care costs. A lot of that is influx, as the district bargains with the teachers’ union over a new contract.

Capital improvements will still be neglected in the budget, which is why administrators want to stress the half cent sales tax increase on the November ballot is still needed.

If approved by voters, the district would get $32 million to $33 million a year for six years to pay for capital improvements.

Administrators will unveil a list Friday of what exactly the money would be used for, if approved. Repairs to roofs, air conditioning systems and pipes are expected on the list.

Thursday’s public hearing gets underway at 5:30 p.m. inside the Educational Services Facility Board Room at the Brevard Public Schools headquarters, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way.
