The Florida chapter of the ALS Association has reported their donations have more than doubled from the this time last year to now; all thanks to the viral Ice Bucket Challenge campaign.

Spokeswoman Alissa Gutierrez said that between July 22 and August 14 the Florida chapter raised nearly $64,000 compared to $27,000 in that same timespan in 2013.

The challenge became a viral sensation in the last couple weeks; and even News 13's Sandra Osborne took the challenge Sunday morning.

Once "challenged," a person has 24 hours to pour a bucket of freezing cold ice water over their head, or make a donation to an ALS charity.

The Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have all participated in the challenge.

So far, the National ALS Association says they have received $9.5 million in donations this year.

According to ALSA.org, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
