Police in St. Louis are investigating an officer-involved shooting Tuesday in the city's sixth district, which is east of where 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a St. Louis County police officer in the suburb of Ferguson, Missouri.

St. Louis police say officers shot and killed a 23-year-old man who was wielding a knife and refused to drop it shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said officers responded to Tuesday to a store where the man was reported to have stolen energy drinks and a pastry. No officers were injured in the incident, Dotson said.

Dotson said the man was acting erratically and told responding officers to "shoot me now, kill me now." He said officers opened fire when the man began approaching them with the knife.

According to KMOV, the CBS affiliate in St. Louis, a large crowd gathered at the scene, not far from Ferguson, which has seen days of protests and clashes with police armed with tear gas over the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by St. Louis County police Officer Darren Wilson.

Witnesses have said Brown's hands were above his head when he was repeatedly shot Aug. 9.

Wilson is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. A grand jury could begin hearing evidence Wednesday to determine whether Wilson should be charged in Brown's death, according to a spokesman for St. Louis County's prosecuting attorney.

The city of Ferguson said Tuesday it working hard to better connect with the community and learn from the "discord and heartbreak" that followed Brown's shooting.

The St. Louis suburb put out a statement Tuesday saying that Mayor James Knowles III, members of the City Council and city employees have been meeting with residents, religious and elected leaders to address concerns raised following Brown's death.

The statement from the city says it wants to get more black officers onto the police force, and to rebuild the West Florissant Avenue business district that has been ravaged by nightly confrontations between police and protesters.
