The Department of Defense announced Thursday that a U.S. soldier from Florida had been killed in action while serving in Afghanistan.

Officials said Sergeant 1st Class Matthew Leggett, 39, Ruskin, died on August 20 in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The DOD said Sergeant Legget was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The report states Sergeant Legget was killed as a result of injuries sustained while engaging enemy soldiers. 

Sergeant Legget was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
