A minor league baseball player hurt on the field in Brevard County was flown to the hospital in the middle of a game Friday afternoon at the Washington Nationals' rookie league practice complex in Viera.

It happened just before 2 p.m. in the bottom of the 4th inning, as the Gulf Coast League Nationals were taking on Port St. Lucie's GCL Mets. A local team representative said a Mets player slid into second base, and his head collided with the knee of the Nationals' shortstop, who was covering the bag.

The injured player, identified by ESPN as Manuel Hilario, began convulsing after the collision. Hilario is a 22-year-old first baseman from the Dominican Republic.

Paramedics arrived on scene and called in a medical helicopter, which landed on the field.

The player was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. His condition was not immediately released.

The game was suspended and is scheduled to continue Saturday at 10 a.m.
