A little boy was bitten by a dog at a little league park in Brevard County, and the dog is now under quarantine.

“I saw it but it did not bark at me. It was just like, get up and run and actually, like, attacked me,” explained bite victim Dominick Mormile.

Dominic was knocked to the ground. But the baseball player limped back onto the field before his mom jumped in, asking Dominick what happened.

“’We later pulled him within like two minutes. It was in the middle of the game," said Charis Mormile. "We pulled him and pulled his pants down to see was there any blood. We didn’t see any blood. But then, later, took him to the back of the car to check his leg and there was. There was two puncture wounds.”

Dominick’s mom took photos of what she said are bite marks on him from the three-year-old golden retriever. Initially, Charise thought the dog was a service dog and didn’t question why it was in a public space.

“I’m not sure they were pawning it off or if it was some misunderstanding," said Brevard County Animal Services director Karla Torpy. "I think the dog had on a vest. I don’t know what the vest said but a lot of people just assume that a dog is a service dog when it has on a vest… even though it’s not.”

Brevard County Animal Services said the dog is actually a therapy dog.

“The owner was not able to show us or confirm it had had recent rabies or valid rabies vaccination,” Torpy said.

A properly trained and certified service dog can go where ever the owner is. A therapy dog is a pet who is certified to visit facilities and work with people, but does not have the access a service dog has.

The dog is in home quarantine for 10 days. Torpy said the dog will get rabies shots and they will have an officer check back on the dog. We did reach out to the dog’s owner through Torpy but the owner never answered the request for an interview. Although Torpy said this scenario isn’t out of the ordinary.

"I mean, these things happen. Sadly, they happen every day,” Torpy said.
