LYNX officials have confirmed the transportation company will receive a grant for $9.3 million from the Federal Transit Administration.

The grant is provided as part of the "Ladders of Opportunity" initiative, and amounts to nearly 10 percent of the $100 million awarded by the FTA in the nation-wide initiative.

LYNX says the money will be used for various projects, including construction of a "SuperStop" in the Pine Hills community, a multi-bus bay transfer structure and the purchase of eight additional 60-foot articulated buses.

The transportation company received valuable support from U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, U.S. Representative Corrine Brown and U.S. Representative Alan Grayson that officials say was crucial to the grant application's success.

"All of us here in the Central Florida community are grateful that our congressional delegation and the FTA have recognized the importance of these projects," said LYNX CEO John M. Lewis Jr. "Now the West Orange community will have access to a much needed and safe transfer facility, and by purchasing new articulated vehicles we can transport more riders to jobs or wherever they desire to travel more quickly and at a lower operating cost."

The FTA Ladders of Opportunity is a capital program focusing on enhancing access to jobs, providing more transportation choices to the public and supporting economic opportunities or partnerships. For more information on the "Ladders of Opportunity" you can visit the White House website here.
