People who live in east Orange County could change the plans for a new school in their community.

At a community hearing Tuesday night, those for and against a K-8 school in the Wedgefield area came together to debate the new school.

“It’s time that we get a school in Wedgefield. These kids are being bused. It takes them an hour to wait at the bus stop, get to school,” said resident Kathy Capatosto who is in favor of the new school.

Jasmine and her husband, Stephen Eggleston, oppose the proposal.

“We believe in education but not in our front yard of our private, rural community when none of the residents had any voice or say or vote in how this happened.”

A show of hands in the auditorium of East River High School reveals a community divided over education.

Take Capatosto, a mother of two children under 10l.

“Families that do have children on our street really want a school," Capatosto said. "All of the people in the front of the neighborhood are really pushing for the school.”

But young couple Jasmine and Stephen Eggleston argue the plan infringes upon the peace of mind they sought when buying their home in 2009. And, they say they are not alone in their opposition, especially when it comes to the traffic a new school would bring.

“There’s hundreds of us that are opposed to this," Jasmine said. "And now, finally, our voice is being heard and hopefully something can be done.”

And voices on both sides of the argument were heard and some questions were answered… but there’s no final decision yet.
