Close, but no cigar.

That's how SpaceX captioned newly-released video showing the first attempt to land a Falcon 9 rocket onto a barge in the Atlantic Ocean.

The company attempted to land the lower stage of the rocket on a barge off Jacksonville, with the hopes of reusing it.

As you can see in the video, that landing was not successful.

SpaceX said the grid fins lost power right before the first stage was supposed to touch down.

The rocket hit the barge at a 45-degree angle, smashing the rocket's legs and engine section.

Despite the explosion, SpaceX said the unmanned ship is ok and only requires some minor repairs.

The rocket launched from the cape last weekend. The top portion of the rocket was able to boost the Dragon capsule to the International Space Station, where it delivered 5,000 pounds of cargo to astronauts.

SpaceX plans to try again to land its first stage rocket on a floating barge during its next launch, happening either at the end of this month or early next month.
