Voters in Flagler and parts of Volusia County chose the Republicans who will run for State Senate and State House in a special election in April.

In the Republican primary race for State Senate District 6, Travis Hutson defeated Ronald Renuart and Dennis McDonald with 52 percent of the vote.

Both Hutson and Renuart were members of the Florida House, but had to resign each of their seats in order to run for the open Senate seat. That vacancy was created when John Thrasher resigned to become the president at Florida State University.

Hutson moves on to the April 7 general election, where he will face Democrat David Cox.

In the Republican primary race for Hutson's old seat, State House District 24, Paul Renner was the runaway winner in a four-way contest that wound up being a three-way race after candidate Sheamus McNeeley dropped out earlier this month.

Renner moves on to the April 7 general election, where he will square off against Democratic opponent Adam Morley.
