A controversial gas station is one step closer to getting the green light in Cape Canaveral.

The Planning and Zoning Board on Wednesday night recommend a special exception permit to build a Cumberland Farms convenience store and gas station on A1A, near Cape Shores Circle.

Residents in the Cape Shores condo unit are concerned about the project and its impact to traffic, safety and historic trees.

The 14 pump gas station would require the removal of several large oak trees.

"A failure to execute our city's vision is going to continue to squeeze out our citizens and make us a shopping mall for gas, taxis, rental cars, and shuttle buses," said Eric Braga, a Cape Shores resident.

The recommendation goes to the Board of Adjustment for final approval of the permit on February 26th.

The city council will have to approve the removal of the trees.

A city spokesman says that decision could come in March.
