More than 100 victims were in Orlando on Friday to see the sentencing for two men who duped them out of their life savings in an $18 million fraud scheme.

The retirees came to Orange County to see two Brevard County men, Donald Babb and Ralph Victor Ruth, each get sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in a Ponzi scheme that lasted about seven years.

"I lost $916,134.62," said Richard Matteson, a victim of the Ponzi scheme.

Babb and Ruth both admitted to the Ponzi scheme that went on for at least seven years before they were caught. Federal investigators said the two men duped unsuspecting seniors out of their retirement funds by telling them they were investing in risk-free Certificates of Deposits (CDs) that were Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation-insured and had higher rates than what would be found at a conventional bank.

Hoyt Byrum came to court for his 99-year-old mother, who is now in a nursing home.

"(My mother) lost about $170,000," Byrum said.

After hearing from many of the victims, a federal judge sentenced each man to a 10-year sentence. The sentences could have been twice that.

Many victims are questioning the judge's decision.

"I honestly thought he was going to come to the conclusion that the damage that was done was serious enough to at least maximize what his options were," Byrum said.

Howard Wallen, another victim, added: "We would have liked for him to get 20 (years). But, the guidelines are the guidelines, and we live in a country of laws — even with jerks."

Babb and Ruth were also were ordered to pay $10 million in restitution.
