A motorcyclist from Michigan and his passenger were killed in a crash with a van in Marion County Wednesday afternoon.

The crash happened at 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of NE 106th Avenue Road and NE 205th Street.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a van driven by Dennis James Degraff, 45, of Interlachen was traveling north on 106th Avenue Road and turned left onto a dirt driveway just south of NE 205 Street and entered into the path of a motorcycle driven by John Smith, 64, of Lansing, Michigan.

Troopers said Smith applied his brakes and the motorcycle fell onto the road and he and his passenger, Pamela Smith, 62, also of Lansing, both struck the roadway and slid under the front of the van.

FHP said John Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue and Pamela Smith sustained severe head trauma and was flown to Shands UF Hospital with critical injuries where she later died.

The crash remains under investigation and troopers said charges are pending.
