Sunday marked the beginning of Fire Prevention Week.

American flags are being flown at half-staff to honor firefighters nation-wide. This year alone, 65 firefighters have lost their lives.

This year’s message from the National Fire Protection Association: “Hear the beep, where you sleep.”

The NFPA is urging people to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of multi-story homes.

Fire Prevention Week is also a time to remember to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Also keep in mind that some fire crews will come out to your house to help you change your smoke alarm batteries, as long as you have the replacement batteries.

Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 10.
