After being censured by city council members, the Mayor of DeBary is trying to find new ways to reach out to his constituents, like Libby Yocum.

Yocum is a 20-year DeBary resident who has ideas on how to improve the city, like bringing industry to a mostly residential community.

“It would bring residents into the city, it would give jobs, it would provide, it would give a lot of tax relief,” said Yocum.

Those are the kinds of ideas Mayor Clint Johnson is looking for.

He even mailed out a flier to every DeBary resident.

It’s a State of the City pamphlet, paid for by local sponsors with a special challenge in the back called the Mayor’s Innovation Challenge.

“Something outside the box,” Johnson said. “I want real true innovation, I want something no one’s really thought of in government, especially code enforcement.”

However, some council members are upset that the pamphlets were sent out before they were consulted.

It’s the same council that voted to censure Johnson earlier this month for being too outspoken.

The mayor himself also voted in favor of the censure.

Councilman Chris Carson says he is disappointed the mayor sent out a mailer without consulting fellow council members.

However, he says he’s not certain if the mailer violates censure rules. The city attorney would advise council on the matter.

“A lot of times when you bring unique ideas and outside the box ideas you end up, if I, if I waited for approval from the whole council or any other governmental agency, it would never get done,” said Johnson.

Homeowners are asked to drop off their ideas into the mayor’s mailbox, the same mailbox which drew scrutiny from city council, and a lawsuit.

Several responses have already been submitted, each with ideas as unique, and possibly as helpful as Yocum’s.

“I like the city, like I said I’ve been here a long time, and I only want it to be a better city,” said Yocum.
