Youth athletic coaches that get thrown out of a game would also be banned for the season under a bill moving through the Florida Senate.

The Senate Community Affairs Committee approved the bill Tuesday. It would apply to leagues with children 12 years of age or under.

Sen. Jeremy Ring, D-Margate (District 29) said his bill (SB 238) is inspired in part by behavior he's seen on the opposite side of the field while coaching his daughter's softball team.

Bill Summary

Requiring an independent sanctioning authority to dismiss an athletic coach ejected from a game for the remainder of that sport season under certain circumstances; authorizing such athletic coach to resume working under certain circumstances, etc.

Ring said many parents are aware of the problem of angry coaches who get overly competitive at youth games.

He said that youth coaches also serve as teachers, and schools wouldn't allow similar behavior in classrooms.

Coaches would be allowed to return the following season if league officials find them qualified.
