Having fun in the water can turn tragic in just seconds, so pay close attention to the little ones around you.

About 280 children younger than 15 drown in pools or spas each year.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, keeping that figure from climbing is mostly up to adults.

Here are some simple ways to keep children safe:

1. Don't get distracted. Never leave a child unattended in a pool.

2. Teach your kids to swim at an early age.

3. Learn how to perform CPR to prepare for a worst-case scenario.

4. Keep kids clear of pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments.

5. In addition to the lifeguard, pick someone to help supervise the children while they're in the water.
