An earlier forecast from Dr. Phil Klotzbach and Dr. Bill Gray at Colorado State University predicted a notably below-average hurricane season this year, with only 7 named storms, 3 hurricanes and 1 major hurricane at category 3 strength or higher. That's the lowest tropical season forecast the retiring Gray has ever issued in his 30 years of predicting hurricane activity in the Atlantic.

2015 forecast summary

  • 7 named storms
  • 3 hurricanes
  • 1 major hurricane (category 3 or above)

Last year's hurricane season saw eight named storms, the fewest since 1997.

But an even quieter season, with just seven named storms, happened in 1992. The first named storm that year grew into Hurricane Andrew, a crucial reminder that it only takes one storm to make landfall and make a devastating impact.

Therefore, prepare as you would for any hurricane season, and have your disaster readiness kits and evacuation plans ready.
