A sophomore at a Marion County high school was arrested Wednesday after deputies found a loaded gun in his truck that was parked on school property.

News 13 is not naming the student, per the station's Crime Guidelines.

The investigation began after a Marion County Sheriff's Office school resource officer at North Marion Middle School received information from a parent that the 10th-grader at North Marion High School was possibly storing a loaded gun in his truck and bringing it to school.

Deputies attempted to make contact with the student Tuesday, but he wasn't at school, a report states.

The student was approached by a school administrator and deputies Wednesday in the school's parking lot.

The student said he had a tactical knife on his person, but he wasn't sure what was in the truck, deputies said.

School officials conducted a search of his truck. They found a loaded .32-caliber pistol in the center console.

The student, according to a report, told deputies he keeps the gun in his truck when he goes hunting and must have forgotten to remove it before he came to school.

The student was arrested and charged with bringing weapons on school property.

A sign posted at North Marion High School indicates any vehicle is subject to being searched — with or without cause — once it enters school property.
