An Atlas V rocket with a GPS satellite on board blasted off from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Wednesday morning.

This was the first rocket launch from the Space Coast since SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket exploded about two minutes into its flight on Sunday, June 28.

United Launch Alliance has had a near-flawless track record with the Atlas V rocket. Wednesday's launch was the 55th Atlas V rocket to blast off.

The rocket is carrying a GPS 2F-10 satellite into orbit, the 10th in a series of 12 next-generation satellites for the Air Force.

The satellites are replacing older ones in orbit around Earth, providing improved time, location and velocity information for U.S. troops around the world.

The Air Force says the satellites also improve navigation data for the GPS devices.
