If you’re driving this holiday weekend, be on the lookout for traffic delays because according to AAA, the highest number of Americans are traveling for Independence Day since 2007.

“Traffic has been pretty good so far, just the typical bottleneck going through Orlando downtown. Other than that its been smooth sailing," said Richard Thompson, who drove from the Tampa area to Daytona Beach Thursday.

"We came into some traffic from Jacksonville, other than that the traffic has been very good. I don't know if it's because we planned, timing was better," Ft. Lauderdale resident Sharon Flynn said.

However, there’s another thing driving factor this year, significantly lower gas prices.

Richard Thompson said he’s saving at least $80 to $90 on every full tank of gas for his RV.

"That is a big big difference on the wallet and able to do more stuff because of that," Thompson explained.

Meanwhile, it’s not just drivers with recreational vehicles that are noticing the difference.

According to AAA, this is the lowest gas prices have been around the Fourth of July in at least the past five years.

“When the prices are down we get to travel more, when the prices are high, we don’t get to go as far as we like too," Flynn said.

Of the 41.9 million Americans traveling more than 50 miles this Independence Day weekend, AAA said nearly 85 percent of of travelers will drive to their holiday destinations this year.

So it’s also paying off to leave home early.

“Try to beat the traffic coming over for race weekend, get camp areas set up and just be able to relax the rest of the weekend and enjoy hanging out with friends and family," Thompson said.
