A new rocket known as the Minotaur will be launching in the years ahead from the Cape Canaveral area.

All rockets currently launched from Central Florida include the Atlas Five, Delta Four and Falcon 9 and in a couple of years the Minotaur will be added to that list.

An aerospace manufacturer and defense industry company based at the Kennedy Space Center, Orbital ATK, plans to launch the first ever Minotaur rocket from Cape Canaveral in mid-2017.

The company was awarded a $23.6 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to launch the ORS-5 SensorSat spacecraft.

The Minotaur IV will launch from complex 46 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Space Florida is hoping several companies will start using pad 46 for smaller rocket launches.

The last launch from pad 46 was Athena I in 1999.
