Say goodbye to Vine, the online video service is being discontinued, Twitter announced Thursday.

  • Twitter is shutting down Vine
  • Vines will still be accessible for now
  • Twitter announced earlier this week it was cutting 9% of workforce

The decision comes after Twitter announced it would lay off 9 percent of its workforce as revenue growth slowed.

The short-form video app allowed users to create 6-second looping clips. The platform became popular for highlighting sports and comedy. It was also responsible for creating a number of Vine stars, including Shawn Mendes, the Canadian singer-songwriter, and Lele Pons, a Miami-based prankster. Both have millions of followers.

All Vines and the website will stay up for now. Vine users will still be able to access and download their Vines, the company said in a release.

“We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch the incredible Vines that have been made.”

Twitter bought Vine in late 2012, launching the app in 2013. Since then, Vine has faced competition from apps such as Snapchat and Instagram, which added a video function in 2013.

Twitter said it will release more details after changes begin.
