Members of a Seminole County community are frustrated with a chunk of State Road 434, calling it extremely dangerous.

Diana Moore from Longwood writes in this week ...

"There needs to be a light at the intersection of State Road 434 and Tarrytown in Longwood. Traffic during rush hour is terrible and it is impossible to make a left-hand turn. My son-in-law even had his Vette totaled at that intersection!"

That Seminole County community is known as Sleepy Hollow. And residents there, just east of the Interstate 4/State Road 434 interchange, said that travel along State Road 434 itself can be hard enough. But for residents at the intersection of Tarrytown Trail and State Road 434, they fear just exiting their own community.

"I feel like I'm playing Russian Roulette every time I come to this intersection," said resident Brian Remington.

That Sleepy Hollow community is now wide awake, so to speak, due to its frustrations with this particular intersection. Residents claim that since that State Road 434 re-widening project, which wrapped up about a year and a half ago, things have actually gotten worse for them trying to get out of their particular residence.

They said that part of the problem arose during the widening of State Road 434 when another exit for the community had to be eliminated to make room.

"The design has forced all of the traffic from these two neighborhoods (Sleepy Hollow and Windsor Manor neighborhoods) to exit through one street,” said Remington. “It's increased the flow of traffic to this one intersection."

More lanes of State Road 434 also mean that there are more lanes to cross for drivers attempting to make a left out of the community.

"During rush hour periods, it can frequently take about 5 to 10 minutes sitting here in queue, waiting for a break in the traffic to sneak across,” said Remington. “And then you have to sit in the middle of the median and wait for an opportunity to pull out and it's frequently very dangerous."

Residents like Remington want a traffic light at the intersection and have even claimed that the Florida Department of Transportation had promised them one to be started back in the summer of this year. The big question on everyone's mind though is "Where is it?"

As it turns out, it is on the way.

There is a traffic signal planned for the intersection of SR 434 at Tarry Town Trail. The signal was justified based on the current side street traffic demand and existing safety history. In fact, FDOT had this to state...

"We had advertised this project before, but received limited responses, so it was re-advertised as a design-build contract that includes a few different projects in the scope. The signal at Tarry Town Trail is a priority project in this contract. We anticipate construction beginning Spring 2017," FDOT stated
