Carnival Corporation will start cruises to Cuba this year -- though not on Carnival Cruise Lines.

Carnival announced Monday that new brand Fathom will operate a 704-passenger ship with cruises between Miami and Cuba starting May 1.

Fathom will be the first cruise line to sail between the U.S. and Cuba in over 50 years.

The MV Adonia will visit Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba during seven-day itineraries. The trips start at $1,800 per person, excluding taxes and fees.

The U.S. approved Fathom's plans last July. The Cuban government gave its approval Monday.

Fathom is a cruise line that brands itself as travel with a purpose, with a focus on cultural immersion. Excursions and shipboard activities are meant to create a kind of cultural exchange program.

Fathom is starting similar trips to the Dominican Republic this spring.
