The Marion County school district has passed a rule to require students to use the bathroom that matches the gender they were born with.

  • Marion School District passed transgender bathroom rule Tuesday
  • Measure would stop transgender students from using bathroom that matches identity

Father Hal Phillips championed the rule after a female student walked into the boys room at Vanguard High School in Ocala while his son was there.

"At the public school system, where you expect your privacy and safety to be paramount, for that person of the opposite sex to walk into his bathroom, it devastated him,” Hal Phillips said.

The school's principal says he allowed the transgender student to use the male restroom after the student declined to use an alternative bathroom.
