A New Smyrna Beach street sign that was stolen almost 30 years ago has been returned.

According to police, City Hall received a package that contained the sign, which reads, “New Smyrna Beach says no to drugs.” The sign also came with a note from the person who allegedly stole it.

The note read, in part, “Fathers of NSB, please accept this sign and funds to re-install it as well as my apologies. Sometime in the late ‘80s, I stole this sign in a fit of youthful exuberance.”

Officials said a $50 money order was included with the note for the reinstallation. However, police said they will not reinstall the sign. They said they can’t return the money because the package did not have a return address.

Police Lt. Shane Riggle said he will hang the sign on a wall inside the police department to show others that people can change their ways.
