Orlando Magic coach Scott Skiles told the team he is stepping down after just one season at the helm.

Skiles, 52, took over the Magic on May 29, 2015. He was the coach for less than 365 days. He was the organization's 12th head coach.

"After much thought, I and I alone, have come to the conclusion that I am not the right head coach for this team," Skiles said in a statement released by the team Thursday morning. "Therefore, effective immediately, I resign my position as head coach of the Orlando Magic."

The Magic went 35-47 under Skiles this season, which was a 10-game improvement from the 2014-15 season. The Magic went 9-6 in November, marking their first winning month since March 2012. The team went an Eastern Conference-best 10-5 in December.

"I sincerely apologize for any unintended consequences that may adversely affect anyone associated with this decision," Skiles said. "The Magic are a world-class organization that employs world-class people. I wish them nothing but great success. I will always be thankful, especially to the DeVos family, for the opportunity."

Skiles has an overall NBA record of 478-480 (.499) as head coach with Phoenix, Chicago, Milwaukee and Orlando. During his 14 seasons as a head coach, Skiles' teams have reached the NBA playoffs six times.

Skiles was a point guard for the Magic from the team's inaugural season in 1989 until 1994.

The announcement was posted to the Orlando Magic's Twitter account Thursday morning.

The Magic said a search for Skiles' replacement will begin immediately.
