A man suspected of brandishing a weapon near a security checkpoint near the White House has been shot by Secret Service officers, CNN is reporting.

The man was shot in the abdomen and taken into custody, CNN said.

Earlier reports said that a person opened fire on the White House complex, but it's unclear whether that person fired a weapon.

A tweet by the U.S. Park Police's official account said that there was a shooting on West Executive Drive, near the White House.

President Barack Obama is not at the White House, but Vice President Joe Biden was there during the incident, according to CNN.

Earlier in the day, Secret Service officers cleared the North Lawn, Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Park during an incident in which officers drew guns, the CNN report said.
