A Sumter County Detention Deputy critically injured in a May 17 car crash died of his injuries Saturday.

Deputy James 'Jimmy' Byron Russo, 31, was driving to work just after 5 a.m. on May 17 when he lost control of his car, overcorrected, and crashed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers reported that Russo was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and was ejected from his vehicle when it overturned.

He was airlifted from the scene and brought to Bayonet Point Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Russo was hired in 2013 at the Sumter County Detention Center as a civilian Detention Support Specialist and later promoted to a certified Detention Deputy.
