The hurricane season officially began June 1 and will end Nov. 30, but this year, the tropics haven’t been paying attention to those dates.

  • Atlantic hurricane season already busy
  • Waning El Niño, possible La Niña could mean many more named storms

We had our first named storm, Alex, in the middle of January. It only lasted a few days but reached hurricane strength and affected the central Azores. Advisories began Jan. 13 and continued through Jan. 15.

Next up was Tropical Storm Bonnie. It developed May 27 and lasted until June 4. This was the first time two preseason Atlantic storms formed since 2012.

We have had two more storms since then: Colin formed June 5 and Danielle just a few days ago on June 20. Colin became the earliest third named storm in the Atlantic basin. and Danielle was the earliest fourth named storm ever.

The season is just beginning, and with a waning El Niño and the possible forming of a La Niña later this season, we could be very busy with storms this year.
